“I can only imagine”

I was staying with friends and watched the movie “I can only imagine”.

I thought, ‘Oh no, another movie of 13 in a dozen.’ However the movie shocked me to tears and made me see how in my own life, pride has had a grip on my behaviour.
Do I regret my life? No, I don’t, but I do very much regret the times that pride and hardness got the better of me. I think of the people that I offended with my sharp words, I recall the times I failed as brother, as a son, as a father, as a husband, the times that I hurt someone younger and more vulnerable because I was so right, full of my unloving self-goodness.

If I could only be allowed to relive and undo those scarring moments of blowing my stack in anger.

I know that God has forgiven me, as Jesus took my sins upon himself, but will the ones that I affected forgive me, or have I opened for them the door of bitterness that will hinder their personal happiness in life? Now I can only pray for them and commit them to my Father’s all encompassing loving care.

Saint Augustine said that ‘pride turned angels into demons, and humility turned men into angels.’

Pride and self-goodness of, “I am a good person” makes us the worst of all people. Especially spiritual religious pride is what opens the door to let the negativity and hardness of the enemy in.
We see this extreme of spiritual pride in the highly-respected, religious people that made sure that Jesus was put to death in the most cruel, sadistic manner. Even when he was in agony, they were still spouting their mocking venom at him. Religious pride is the worst pride of all.
Pride has many heads, the macho head, the feminist head, the religious head, the domineering head, the spiritual head, the liberty head, the anarchy head, the matter-of-principle head, the LBGT head, the dress-proper head, the atheist head, the I-don’t-care head, the pacifist head, the show’m-the-finger head, the I’ll-settle-this head, the greed head, the depression head, etc., etc.

The things in which we pride ourselves and we think are our strengths, are in truth our weakness, our Achilles’ heel.
Pride is the root cause of domestic violence, street gangs, the arms race, wars, etc. It sets husband against wife – wife against husband; president against president; right against left – left against right; country against country; religion against religion; white against black, black against white; neighbour against neighbour; brother against sister, offspring against parents, parents against offspring, soldier against soldier, there is just no end to the list.
Only our pride gets hurt, it starts with, “So far and no further – they just need to know how it feels – this is where I draw the line – where is the respect? – I won’t let them walk all over me.” We get offended, “I would have never done or said that.” As a result we talk down about others and yell at them, we even think that we can make the other person behave by getting angry and possibly physically abusive.

“Great peace have they that love your word and nothing shall offend them.” (Psalm 119:165) The question remains, ‘How easily do I get offended?’
Humility does not really feel the hurt. With humility we try to see it from the other person’s view point we listen and try to understand them and maybe even learn something. By so doing we enrich ourselves and build a relationship that will flourish. Yet in the blindness of our pride we cannot see the other person’s side. How blind am I?

Pride tells us that we must put our foot down. However then we are glued to the ground and cannot move forward nor learn, we cannot enrich ourselves, nor widen our horizons and our relationship will not flourish, but will end in turmoil.

Why did God use Moses?
‘The man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.’ (Numbers 12:3)
Quotations of Jesus Christ:
Learn of me; for I am meek and humble in heart: and your soul shall find rest.’ (Matthew 11:29)
‘He that shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matthew 18:4) Am I still the child that trusts, says sorry, gives love, and is quick to forgive?
‘For everyone that exalts himself shall be abased (taken down from his high horse); and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.’ (Luke 18:14)
In due time, when the proud ones have destroyed each other then, ‘The meek shall inherit the earth.’ (Matthew 5:5)
‘And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:7)

Decapitate the heads of pride, and let’s break out of the box of pride, remorse and depression.
